Chapter 5 Discussion

Networks will continue to have to solve problems as processing speeds reach further and further toward real time.  Networks are not the current bottleneck.  Fiber optic connections can transmit data faster than it can be stored on a hard drive.  I believe fiber optic technology will continue to develop faster and more innovative ways to transmit data over a fiber optic line.  I don’t foresee a new cable type eclipsing it short of a new material being invented.  Wireless networks have security issues that will always be present.  Incredibly sensitive information will always have to be transmitted through a wired connection.  As new encryption methods are developed, new hacks are found and implemented.  Current wireless security is relatively safe, however, if a hacker wants to get at your information (for some strange reason) a wireless network connection makes it slightly easier.

I think the internet will continue to expand rapidly for a good while.  I would predict the internet will absorb other communications in the near future.  I would like to see fiber optic connections directly to every home and building in the world one day.  I’m not entirely sure what you mean by ethical problems in this context.  I would oppose any growth restriction placed on the internet, and I also oppose any technology that could be used to charge premium fees for various websites.

In a perfect world everyone would have 100% secure wireless internet access with them everywhere they go, preferably in an implant that communicates directly with the brain.  This is probably not likely to happen in my lifetime, unfortunately.  I am sure though that we will develop a means of brain to machine communication eventually.

I have always had a home network.  I’ve been building computers since I was about 15 years old.  I primarily use them for file sharing, printer sharing, and gaming purposes.  I have 3 computers, a Nintendo Wii, and an X-box 360 all connected to my network currently.  I have a 38 or so character long passphrase and I don’t broadcast my SSID.  I feel I am somewhat secure with my wireless network.  My friends that come over like to use it often with their laptops.  I’m not sure that it’s for everyone, but for a geek like me it’s essential.  I can’t imagine any drawbacks if you are careful about it, but there are many people out there with no security on their wireless networks at all.  That presents a large drawback in the form of potential identity theft.
